New Australian Music for Brass; Featured composer! Alice Chance

James Blackford

Hear a little more about Alice and her piece "Three Golden Eggs"

Was there an inspiration for the piece? If so, what was it?

The inspiration is the old fable The Goose that laid Golden Eggs. There are many versions of it, but in the one I'm familiar with, a man has a goose that lays one golden egg every day. He greedily kills the goose to try and find all the gold that must be inside, but finds none. Unlike the fable, there's no moral comment about greed intended in my piece. I just liked the idea of three gleaming miniatures that could be likened to golden eggs. They play on themes of abundance, brilliance, and smallness. And brass instruments are shiny and golden which I like! What did you like about writing for brass?

I love the tone, the capacity for gentleness and brazenness.

What’s different about this project for you?

I felt that James and Matt were up for anything. From multi-tracking to going way beyond where I thought their ranges were. It was a really cool, playful experience. I felt like anything was possible.

Trumpet or euphonium?

Euphumpet

Other projects to check out?

I'm writing a Clarinet Concerto for Oliver Shermacher and the Willoughby Symphony. Save the date: 14th and 15th of August.

What’s your background in composition?

Grew up thinking I was a bad violinist because I preferred improvising to practicing. Realised when I was 16 that that could be a job! I went to the Sydney Conservatorium and had great teachers like Paul Stanhope, Anne Boyd, and Daniel Yeadon.
